If you live in the Central Valley (Fresno) there really is no other option (well, there is Badger Pass in Yosemite, but it's strictlty for beginners). You can get there in 90 minutes from Fresno. Nice medium size mountain with a good variety iof terrain. There are no long double diamonds, but at least there are some steeps. The beginner trail (it's called Academy) is great. As soon as a new skier can snow plow, they can ride the lift and use the 2.25 mile long Academy run. The resort does not have high speed quads and that's the biggest drawback, but there is nothing else that is a day trip from Fresno. This is the least expensive resort in California where one can ski on a decent mountain. A season pass sells for as little $199.00 and you can park your RV in the parking lot for $30.00 bucks for three days with unlimited electricity and access to a bathroom building and the shower room in the lodge. I live in Fresno and although I love the big Tahoe resorts, at least I can wake up in Fresno and go skiing on a whim. I suggest that you drive up using Friant Road (exit from Highway 41)and snag a $1.99 steak and eggs breakfast on the way up. I suggest you park in the back lot and then you can setup your stuff on picknik tables located right near the lift one. It's small, but that's part of the charm; you don't have to walk all over the place at lodge level. Lift lines are rarely a problem.
